We all have a love-hate relationship with Google and their search engine rankings algorithm.
One minute we're on top and breathing easy... the next minute we're buried (and barely breathing).
This is especially true if you try to game the system by using blackhat tactics or buying links.
Google doesn't like that and is even willing to penalize themselves. Google Japan was caught buying "reviews" from bloggers and slapped themselves by reducing Google.co.jp's search engine rankings from a 9 to a 5. Brutal. Well, it's against the rules and even Google lives by it.

I only talk about "whitehat" SEO strategies because they work without getting the Google slap. And boy do I know what it feels like being slapped. It stings.
About 7 years ago I felt the shockwaves when Google completely de-listed several of my sites. My traffic went from 100k down to nearly nothing overnight. You can guess what happened to my sales.

Thanks Joel! Really appreciate the kind words. The first key to any business is providing great value. If you do that, the inbound links come in, the social buzz is created, the buyers flock to you and the trust builds.
Any short-term outlook (whether it be from an SEO perspective or a business perspective) won't last and won't benefit you in the long run. And Joel, I know YOU get that too!
I think a lot of people lost A LOT of money and time over the course of a very short period of time... but it's those like you who stand up and work harder that truly succeed.
