How to Build an Online Business Empire

Many of you may not know this, but in certain media circles, I'm actually known as "Ronnie Nijmeh the Stress Expert."

I'm sort of a subject matter expert here, having actually written books on stress, conflict, and healthy living, and running a self-improvement content site that grabs over 25k unique visitors organically each month (as of this writing).

I'm constantly contacted by the media to be interviewed about stress relief and I've been featured on national TV, radio, newsprint, and magazines. I've even been offered a 'stress expert' spokesperson job for a vacation company. (For real... I couldn't believe it either!)

I get all this attention even though I barely focus any time or energy on that site. Why am I considered a subject matter expert for stress relief?

Because I've built my own little online business empire. I'm known as an expert not because I'm some magical stress guru, but because I took the time to develop an authority site. An authority that grabs thousands of visitors each month from Google while barely lifting a finger.

Was it expensive? My mistakes sure cost me thousands... but once I built my system, it began to roll like clockwork and it was very affordable. I had to learn the hard way, I guess.

Has it been hard? Not particularly. It did take effort though. You can't become an authority site overnight, but it doesn't have to take years, either. All my media exposure came about in less than 9 months, and once I got my first shot, the others came a-knockin' within a couple weeks. When it rains, it sure does pour!

The key though is to position yourself as the expert. Not an expert, but the expert.

And the way you do that is by building an authority site overflowing with valuable content that parachutes you to the top of the search engines, becoming a subject matter expert in the process.

Thanks for sharing your story. I guess the hardest part is to become "the" expert in a sea of wannabes and fakers. How did you overcome this?

  2. Thanks for the comment, Phil. It may be hard to cut through all the "noise" out there, but it sure isn't impossible. The key to being the authority is to look like one. That means a professional site that's updated frequently with relevant content. That means posting your real photo, not a caricature... that means having a "Press" page for the media... that means having a phone number available on the site. And so on.

Ask yourself: how far are you willing to go to stand out? If it means posting audio or video clips of you speaking, then do it.

Just think of it this way... the wannabes don't want the extra work. They do the bare minimum and hope for the best. If you take your business seriously and take action, then you'll reap the rewards.

    Nice post,
This is the route that i've just taken. At first i was just relying on promoting a website and not even collecting names.

Now i have my own website, sales page squeeze page, blog and i'm capturing subscribers.

Now i don't have a lot of content on the site yet but i've already setup my blog to have a post each day. That will grow over time of course.

I'm just getting started with all this and i hope it all goes well.

  4. Keep up the momentum, Zoul! It'll make a huge difference in the weeks and months ahead. I noticed your goal of becoming a super-affiliate. If you didn't already know, we have an affiliate program, check it out: PLR.me Affiliate Program

Very good information Ronnie. I am in the process of redesigning and updating my website to include more content. I saw your site and it gave me ideas of how to structure it to make it look professional. Hopefully by the weekend I should have it completed.

  6. Thanks Lisa! Best of luck on the new website.

    Hi Ronnie,

I like your post and your plr.me contents.

    But...

How can I become "the" expert if other plr.me members are also using the same contents?

    Thank You.

  8. Darlene says:

Great Video! One of the first things I learned with SBI is content and more content. I purchased some of your articles after seeing you on TV with Steven and Chris. I haven't used them yet, but I will start re-writing them and implementing them soon. Thanks!

  9. @Anton: If you use the content without putting your own unique "spin" on it, then you won't stand out. But if you create videos, podcasts, physical products, teleseminars and more, you will be able to stand out. Consider PLR as a stepping-off point. Some of my members are using the materials to expand their in-person workshops and seminars, others are creating membership sites, others are turning words into videos, and so on. It's all in how you approach it!

@Darlene: How cool! Did you see me "live" on TV or via the videos on the site? It was a cool experience to have airbrushed make-up and to see behind the scenes... that's something I never would have had a chance to do hadn't it been for developing a strong authority site.

  10. Darlene says:

    Ronnie,

Yes, I love seeing what really goes on behind the scenes. I did not see the live show. I saw your video on your site. I thought you presented very well. Very relaxed. Like you had been there a hundred times. It is funny you mention the makeup. Steven and Chris were out here last year for the home show and did a live appearance. They are so very funny. When Chris came out into the audience we instantly noticed the amount of makeup on his face. I think he would look good without it, but they probably get use to a look.

You are also correct, the personal appearance did lend a tonne of credibility to your site.

  11. @Darlene: Thanks! It really was a great experience, especially considering they gave me about 2 days notice. The makeup is a requirement for TV. I must say, if I didn't have all that junk caked on, you'd see the sweat beads trickling down my face, especially with the intense lighting! Funny enough, I actually felt like my face was beet red and sweating bullets, but the makeup formed an impenetrable mask. :)

    Hi Ronnie,

I am the expert!! I am in the process of launching two websites, same niche, (self improvement, self help) different focus. I have just recently learned about PLR.me and am excited about becoming a member. I am excited about the fresh content that I can customize and turn into other products, although this will be somewhat of a challenge initially to turn all this content into a different kind of product........I am ready...with creative ideas..

Great video! Thanks for sharing your story and sharing these tips.

I think many times a simple concept is turned into complicated and that's where people get stuck.

Being over the age of "39", for many of us, getting past the old style marketing and training is the stumbling block.

Networking just comes naturally to the younger crowd.

    Enjoy your mini messages too!

  17. Hey

What can I say, you have presented the video at just the right angle. Not too techie and not too simple, at least I can see where you are coming from. Keep it up!!

  18. Glad to add you to my network, your views on PLR are very helpful. How long have you been in the PLR space?

  19. Glad to have you here! PLR.me started up about 16 months ago, and I've been a user of PLR for many years. :)

Get signed up to my list for some REALLY cool PLR stuff in the works...

  24. Jeff says:

    Ron,

Great post! Becoming an expert in the field is important for the long haul. Thanks for your great products I own several PLR products that you provide. Again Thanks!

    Jeff

  25. Thanks for the information about being an expert especially. I joined a site called Self-Growth.com and I am learning about how to be an expert there. They allow members an "expert page". You have to like writing. It enables a person to explain things.

I liked your video. I am looking forward to getting your newsletters.
    thanks,
    sincerely

  26. simon says:

    hey Ronnie.,
of course you were a "stress expert" before you started the website, if I recall some of your earlier promos,
not to say a "non expert" cant build an authority website and have some degree of success... but at some stage I think it means choosing a small sub niche and doing a lot of research so you can self educate yourself to become "Ther Expert" and have acce4ss to all the right information and answers for your web clientelle, and when true success comes, the wider media..
Im sure you didnt present yourself on TV talk shows without some TRUE credentials in the field and enough studied knowledge that you could easily answer questions ad lib...
Building an authority website that can be subtlety monetized (my goal)
and have good communication with a large base of regular users, is not quite the same as being an "Actual personal Expert" in a professional field.

Just to keep it real, for some it will be more about building an "Expert Website", than becoming a "Personal Expert", with time, information, education and the BIGGIE Personal Experience, one may eventually become "The Expert"

  27. Benin says:

Hey Ronnie, this is oldie but goodie if I ever saw one. Creating authority sites and becoming a subject matter expert are just as relevant today as they were when you wrote this. Major kudos man!

  28. Donna Thomas says:

Ronnie, just getting started and feeling a little overwhelmed. How do you pick a subject where you become an expert. So many "niches" seem inundated and I'm not sure what direction to head. Any suggestions? ... and believe me I have heard the "find your passion" but I am not sure there is such a thing for me.. have been stretched too thin for too long with 100 pots on the stove all at once, with barely a chance to taste them let alone savor. If you get my drift.. Help!

  29. Carrie says:

Great post. I have purchased several of your PLR products with great satisfaction. Keep up the good work!

  30. Mike says:

Wow. Video sounds like a late night infomercial. Do I get a set of super slicers with that?

  31. betty says:

Cool video, Ron. When I first heard of PLR I thought it was badly written stuff that would ruin my profession as a writer. However, I've been enlightened. I've purchased some very useful, well written PLR. Now I see it as having a draft and some preliminary research done for me. A great time saver. Thanks for creating PLR.me.

  32. This makes a lot of sense. For me, the hardest part is having that confidence to put forward the persona of "the expert" when you fear someone noticing and pointing out things you don't know and when you know there are others who know more about something than you do. How do you overcome that? --Debbie

  33. Stacy Flores says:

Thanks for the great video. Content is definitely important. Relevant and Recency-Love it!
